Connectivity through firewalls
Our server offers excellent connectivity if you are behind a restrictive firewall. The standard TCP port for XMPP is 5222, many firewalls only allow connections to ports 80 and 443 (that is, HTTP and HTTPS respectively). Our server also provides connectivity through port 443, so you should be able to connect in most firewall-restricted networks. Please be aware that XMPP clients should connect to the address defined by the SRV-record of the respective domain (e.g. SRV _xmpp-client._tcp.jabber.at) and not to the address defined in the A-record of the domain.
BOSH & Websockets
We support connecting via BOSH (XEP-0206: XMPP over BOSH), also known as HTTP Binding) and Websockets (see RFC 7395). Both can be used in web-based clients (such as our own webchat.jabber.at) or clients that support it directly. Both methods use standard HTTPS and should pass through any firewall. We fully conform to XEP-0156, so many clients should be able to automatically discover alternative connection methods. If you want to configure them manually, the URLs are:
- BOSH: https://http.jabber.at/http-bind/
- Websockets: https://http.jabber.at/ws/
